Wall of
Distinction Honoree

E.O. and Vivian David
were instrumental in the quest to provide quality education
for African American students in Cynthiana. E. 0. was born in
Cynthiana and graduated from Wilberforce University and the
University of Cincinnati. He came to Banneker School in 1930
as a coach and science teacher, taking over the reins as
principal after the retirement of principal W. E. Newsom in
1941. When Banneker closed in 1963, E.0.moved to the local
junior high school. In 1974, the Davids' daughter Marilyn
wrote that her father "spent the remainder of his life
teaching science and developing a curriculum for education,
and stressed physical education as developing the storehouse
for man's knowledge." He was, she says, a "truly devoted
teacher, thinking only of his students and how he could help
them. Many have been able to go to college through his efforts
to obtain scholarships and financial aid for them." Vivian F.
David, a native of Urbana,:
Ohio, met E. 0. David
as a student at Wilberforce. A graduate of Central State
University and the University of Kentucky, she was a full-time
teacher at Banneker from 1946 until the school closure in
1963. She developed the music department and taught choral
music, speech, and dramatics. The couple had three children:
Teresa Moore, Baldwin David, and Marilyn Davi Wash.
