8th Grade Classes and Teachers

Language Arts

English in the eighth grade focuses on many topics. Students begin their exploration through the elements of short stories, including myths, legends, and tales of all kinds. From this point they move into the history of drama, focusing on past cultures of Greece, Rome, Britain, and Asian countries. 

Students learn what goes on behind the scenes of plays and who plays the greatest parts, besides the actors. Our next trip follows the path not taken by most students through poetry writing. 

They learn about types of poems set-up, and the famous poets of the past and present. We round out the year with grammar review. 

Students keep things exciting with class novels and creative assignments that require more than writing skills.

Algebra

The responsibility of the Algebra class is to do a basic review of the Pre-Algebra concepts, as well as preparing  students for the Core Content assessment and for accelerated classes in high school. 

The basic review consists of concepts such as evaluating expression, order of operations, properties, patterns and sequences, and integers using rational and irrational numbers. 

Students then move into Algebra I concepts such as solving equations, ratios, proportions and percents, inequalities, monomials, polynomials, factoring 9using number theory concepts), graphing linear equations, and working with systems of equations.

Pre-Algebra

In the 8th grade math students who do not qualify for Algebra take general math that works its way into a pr-algebra class by the middle of the third nine weeks. Students will master some of the concepts that they have worked with in the previous grades and build upon those concepts to be prepared for the math classes that they will take in high school. 

Many of these previous concepts as well as the new ones are incorporated into open response and multiple choice questioning which prepares them for the CATS testing in the spring.

By the end of the 8th grade math students should be at a mastery level for all operations of fractions, decimals and integers as well as the whole numbers. 

Students keep a glossary of math terms that is a part of their math life for the remainder of their education.

Concepts that will be a major part of the math curriculum for 8th graders are the following: integers; rational numbers; formulas, including area of rectangular prisms and circles; volume; converting Celsius and Fahrenheit; Pythagorean Theorem; solving equations; order of operation;; properties including substitution; coordinate graphing; solving inequalities and graphing the solution; square roots of numbers and squaring numbers; number with exponents. 

Social Studies

Social Studies in the 8th grade includes the study of Geography, Government and Civics, Economics, and United States History from Early Native Americans to the Civil War and Reconstruction.

 Students study the first Americans and the cultural aspects of their society. They study European exploration to the New World and the colonization of the Americans. Students become familiar with the 13 colonies as they discover the geographical and economic side of colonial life. They will also investigate the colonial road to revolution with Great Britain with emphasis on the economic and political aspects of the war.

The students are introduced to the Constitution and its Amendments and the newly formed government after the Revolution. The development of the new nation and the political periods between President Washington and President Lincoln are also covered. Students examine the different societies of the North and the South and how their contrasts led to the Civil War. They study how our nation tried to rebuild itself during the Reconstruction. 

The area of Women's issues in the late 1800's that led to Women's Suffrage is studied, and the Industrial period in American History is also touched on in the curriculum.

Science

We teach ecology (relationships between the living and the nonliving environment), geology (geologic time, fossils and the law of superposition), chemistry (heat, chemical formulas) and physics (Newton's laws, mathematical formulas).

Resources Classes

The curriculum in the resource room consists of the same concepts as those presented in the general curriculum. The students are responsible for learning the same information in language and mathematics as they would be required to learn in a regular classroom. This is accomplished with modifications to allow the students to be successful.
