Student engagement is at the core of effective teaching and learning. Students should have a clear target of their learning. It is also important for teachers to make real-world connections during the learning process. Students need to understand how the learning relates to them and their lives. Students also need to know what expectations the teacher has for their learning product. By focusing on these areas, we can ensure that we are reaching our students' full learning potential. Then, we have a classroom where students are a part of their own learning process. Try this simple idea. Post these four . . . . . .

During teacher interviews, I discovered that many teachers want to know more about literacy centers. Literacy Centers are an excellent way to allow students to practice literacy using a collaborative, hands-on approach. In addition to independent reading practice through literacy centers, teachers can offer reading practice using meaningful whole group and small group instruction to meet the needs of all learners. Debbie Diller is an excellent resource for effective use of literacy centers and small group instruction. Her books about literacy work stations and small groups would be beneficial to read while implementing literacy centers. If you are interested, I have a few books available for . . . . . .
Teachers During the next few weeks I will be conducting one-to-one interviews with each of you. During this 10-15 minute interview, I will ask questions concerning current teaching realities, questions about instructional practices, and questions supporting your professional growth. These questions will help me examine each teacher's concerns and interests and assist on an individual basis. For example, a veteran teacher will have different needs than a new teacher. Everyone has made me feel so welcome this past week, I really appreciate it!
