HS101 is an orientation program for students entering 9th grade at Harrison County High School. Students will meet in the auditorium on Thursday, August 4. The program will begin promptly at 6:00pm. Students will need to bring their schedule. Parents are welcome to attend, but friends and other family members are encouraged to remain at home. Students will be going through their schedule and going to each class where they will meet that teacher, be given information about the class and additional information they will need as HCHS students. They will be dismissed from class by bell and have 5 minutes to get to their next class. This is the amount of time they will have during a regular school day. Due to limited space in classrooms and the number of students who participate in HS101, only the student and one parent will be allowed in each classroom. Additional people who may attend with the student will be asked to wait in the auditorium.
There is no sign up or pre-registration. Just be in the auditorium by 6:00.

Wow, with Spring Break starting in just a little while, that means this school year will be wrapping up before you blink. With the spring brings lots of activities on the hill-top.
Prom is April 17. The Harrrison County Youth Services Center's Advisory Council sponsors Cinderella's Closet. This is a prom assistance program for young ladies. We have been extra busy fitting girls with dresses. Any HCHS girl who needs a prom dress can stop by YSC and fill out a form. These need to be turned in as soon as possible so we can have everyone fitted upon return from break.
The Class of 2010 will soon be completing their high school career and passing into adulthood. What an amazing class this group is. I am so proud of them all. One of the neatest things about my job is watching kids come in as freshmen, trying to find where they fit into the world and growing into the incredible young adults they have become as they walk across the stage. The Youth Services Center will have graduation announcements available for students in need of this assistance. Seniors need to listen to announcements and the morning show to know when these are available.
Have a safe and happy Spring Break

Today I am taking advantage of a quiet, yet messy, snow day. The Youth Services Center is funded through a state grant. The Program Plan (grant) is on a two year cycle. This means every two years a new Program Plan must be submitted for approval to continue funding. This is the year to resubmit. A cross section of students and parents at both the middle and high school, as well as staff at both schools, completed the YSC needs assessment survey. Results of this survey are used to collect data and drive our program. The due date for the Program Plan is rapidly approaching, so I am using this quiet time to get this completed.
Along the lines of funding and grant money. Our current budget (09-10) was cut by 3%. This is a big blow to the FRYSCs across the state as this is money that we had to give back and the fiscal year is already half way over, which means a good sum of money has already been spent. Harrison County YSC is fortunate to have partnered with such programs as KY-ASAP and Champions for a Drug Free Harrison County who are able to help fund programs related to prevention. This makes the process a little easier.
Have a safe and relaxing snow day!

Happy New Year to all. This is the time of year I get a little blue. The Seniors are into their last semester of school and then end will get here sooner than expected. I am so blessed to be able to watch these young lives change and mature from the little kids the enter 6th grade as into the wonderful young adults they have become as Seniors at HCHS. I look forward to a bright future for our community and our country.
Some things to be aware of and watching for…
January 18, 2010 is Martin Luthor King, Jr. Day. St. James AME will be hosting a Worship Service (321 W. Pleasant St.) and March. This year you will be treated to a special guest speaker, Colmon Elridge, ExecutiveAssistant to the Governor. Colmon is a dynamic speaker, a wonderful young man and an HCHS Alumni.
January 23, 2010 is Super Saturday sponsored by Champions for a Drug Free Harrison County. This will be from 9:00am – 2:00pm at HCHS. This event is for the entire family and free of charge. Lots of volunteers will be needed to make this day a success. If you are a high school student needing volunteer hours, this is a great opportunity for you. I especially encourage my ASOCK kids to get involved…after all, this is the mission of our group!!
2010 I Pledge to be Drug Free Essay/Scholarship Contest is coming up. This also is sponsored by Champions. This is open to any Harrison County Senior who has all passing grades. Scholarship Award amounts are $600, $500 and $400. Listen to morning announcements for details!

I would like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. I hope you spend a safe, enjoyable and healthy holiday with friends and family. I am so blessed to have the position I have as the Coordinator of the Harrison County Youth Services Center. We have incredible young people in our schools and I am so honored to be part of their educational life. I look forward to watching each of them grow into wonderful and productive people. I know they will change the world for the better.
I would like to remind you that our Christmas Angel program is in full swing. As you can imagine, with our economy as it is, we have more students on our Angel Tree than ever before. If you, your family, club or group would like to "adopt" an Angel for Christmas, stop by CEC and pick one out. You do not have to buy everything on their list and everything is appreciated. If you would rather make a small donation, all of the money given goes directly to serving the Christmas Angels. Donations can be dropped off or mailed to the Community Education Center at 308 Webster Ave.

I would just like to take this opportunity to thank all of the men and women who have served and are currently serving our great country. I consider it an honer and a blessing to be living in a country that allows me the freedom to make choices in my life and raise my children with a feeling of security.
If you are a young lady or gentleman that is interested in learning more about our Armed Forces as a step after high school, or even a career, please stop by my office and pick up information.
