Week of May 7

May 6th, 2012

All this week students are taking the new state test, the KPREP, and our 8th grade students are testing in reading, math, social studies and on-demand writing. Testing will take place every morning. Some classes will be held each afternoon, but they will alternate each day.

For the test, students may bring an unopened bottle of water the first day and then leave it in the classroom and refill each morning.

Make sure your child gets plenty of rest and arrives on time to school. Once the tardy bell has rung, the back door will be locked and everyone must enter from the front door.

In this class, students will be creating a story using a software called HollyWood High. They will work on it this week and next and may use a partner.

Student Learning Target: I can complete my search engine scavenger hunt.

Today you have one more scavenger hunt to complete. I did find out I will have you next Monday and Wednesday for class. On Monday I will show you how to use Hollywood High and then you can begin working on your project. You may work alone, or with 1-2 people, as long as everyone helps on it. One warning, you do have to log onto the computer as you, not as coltslab, or you can’t save your story in Hollywood High.

Bell Ringers:
1. What are some personal pieces of information that you should never share online?
2. What is cyberbullying? Why do you think it’s such a big problem in our society?
3. Why is it important not to put too much information in your online profile for any site you are a member of?

Student Learning Target: I can complete my scavenger hunt.

Turn in all 3 scavenger hunts from this week. Then you may use the 2.0 web tools. No music and no videos. No talking to your neighbor. Use headphones for the web tools.

Bell Ringers:
1. Why is it a bad idea to share your password with a friend?
2. Is there anything you can do to safely meet an online friend in person?
3. Why do you have to be careful when downloading a file or video or picture from a website you haven’t used before?

Student Learning Target: I can complete my search engine activity sheet. I can begin my next search activity worksheet.

If you haven’t finished the search engine worksheet from yesterday, please finish that today. If you have, you have another activity to complete. It is at your workstation.

If you recorded your photo story yesterday, let me save to my flash drive.

Today’s Bell Ringers:
1. Did you find that using the “OR” operator made your results bigger or smaller?
2. What about when you used the “AND” operator, were your results bigger or smaller? (As far as adding synonyms or more specific words to your search.)
3. What are 2 facts you learned from your Web Safety scavenger hunt?

May is here! Summer can’t be far behind. :0)

Today you will first finish the scavenger hunt from yesterday if you haven’t. Turn in when completed. Remember, the link is here on my blog under blogroll, called Safe Surfing.

Next you have a new search engine activity. Ms. Cordray will pass it out and you will be searching using various search terms and operators and then giving me the number of results.

If you don’t finish the search engine activity today, we will continue with it on Wednesday. But you should definitely finish the activity we started on Monday.

As always, keep the talking to a minimum. If you are sent from the room for misbehaving for a sub, that can get you ISS. We are too close to the end of school for you to be doing this, so please be good and quiet and work alone.

Today’s Instructions:
1. Complete your photo story, if I haven’t saved it to my flash. Let me know when you are completed so I can save.

2. Start the Internet “Online Safe Surfing” Scavenger Hunt. If completed, turn in to small basket. Do your own work, it’s not a group effort.

3. Do not talk, there has been too much in the last couple of weeks. I will send you out to the bench and you lose break today and jeans day. Do not argue when I ask you to go.

4. If you happen to finish the scavenger hunt, you can use the 2.0 web tools, no youtube or pandora.

5. Today’s work is for a grade so get busy. No Bell Ringers today. We have this week and the week after testing to earn grades in here and a few of you could use some good grades.

Student Learning Target: I can record my photo story.
Continue where you are at in your photo story project. If you get it recorded and are happy with it, I need to save it to my flash drive. You may then use the 2.0 web tools or read your library book. No other choices.

Today’s Bell Ringers:
1. In some classes you have to do a 9 weeks project and you have a choice as to what to make or do. How could you use Photo Story for one of those projects in any of those classes?
2. If you record your audio and during one part you started to cough, how do you fix that without recording it all over again?
3. Why is an audio presentation like we are doing better than a text presentation?

Student Learning Target: I can continue my research project or start my photo story.

Today I will show you how to use photo story. That way once you have your script finished and your 8-10 pictures saved to a folder on your desktop, you can begin to put the project together.

Bell Ringers:
1. Go to Bing. Figure out how to search on pets and include dogs and cats. Exclude fish and hamsters. How did you type it in and how many results did you get?
2. Go to Ask.com and ask how many rivers are in the world. Ask which river is the longest. What were both your answers?
3. Which search tool would have the most up to date information about the presidential election for this year?

Wednesday, April 25

April 25th, 2012

Today’s Instructions: Complete your bell ringers as usual. We will go over on Thursday. Someone help Jacob Ellis to log into Internet and get to this blog if he has trouble.

Bell Ringers:
1. Go to Yahoo and search for: (Disney characters) -Donald Duck. How many results did you get?
2. Go to Bing and search for: “female singers” and “disney stars”. How many results?
3. Tell me one fact you have learned about your famous person.

Next, continue working on your research. If you have finished your notes, come up and get a script from the sub and fill that out.

If you are finished with that, you can find your pictures for your project. You need 8-10 and you save them to My Pictures, which is in My Documents. Instructions for that are on the script.

Next, you can go and listen to the previous photo stories by clicking on this link. When you click on a photo story, it may take a minute or so to load. The page may even look white but the photo story will eventually load. You will first see the quicktime symbol and then the photo story will appear and play. (If you get a message asking you a yes or no question about files, just click on no.) You will need headphones. Listen to these for at least 10 minutes to get an idea of how you will need to sound on your own project.

Finally, you can use the 2.0 web tools if you have any time left. The sub knows to watch to make sure you are not on youtube or playing games, so make sure you don’t get yourself in trouble and sent to ISS for misbehaving for a sub while I am gone.

See you Thursday.

Student Learning Target: I can continue to research and take notes on my famous person.

Remember, when you finish your note taking, let me see if you have enough information. I will then give you the script and you can transfer the notes into a script. You can also begin to find pictures related to your person. Download them into My Pictures. Instructions are on the script handout you will get today. You don’t need music for this project so I should not see or hear any on your computer.

Bell Ringers:
1. When in the future will you use the research methods you learned in this class?
2. Go to Yahoo. Search for (cooking and salt free diet) and “quick meals”. How many results did you get?
3. How did I say you would end your presentation?
