  • We are currently reading Tops and Bottoms. A trickster tale about a lazy bear who sleeps through every planting season, so conniving Hare makes a deal. He and his family will work Bear’s land and split the crops in half. It talks about how some vegetables are tops and some bottoms. We will be talking about many different plants, especially vegetables. We decided that we would like to have a feast on Monday, May 21. We are asking that you send in vegetables preferably ones already cut up for our students to enjoy. I will provide ranch dip for the students to have with the vegetables. I will also be providing the plates, napkins & drinks.

Please let me know if you will be able to send in a precut vegetable and which one.

    Thanks in advance,

    Mrs. Heimlich

    Welcome back

Welcome back, hopefully everyone had a safe and exciting Spring Break. We have 3 weeks of instruction before the state tests. We have a lot of review planned during this time. We will be switching classes in the afternoon 3 days a week and each teacher will be focusing on one area of review. Let’s try and make sure that the students are here everyday before testing so they don’t miss any review time. Enjoy this week, it will be a long one for the students.

We are anticipating Spring Break, which is next week. When we return to school, we have 3 weeks before K-PREP!
    Upcoming Events
Mid-terms will come home after Spring Break on April 18th.
    K-PREP testing is Monday-Thursday, May 7th-10th.
Salato Wildlife Center field trip is Wednesday, May 16th. Paperwork will come home closer to the time.

    Spring Party

Now that spring is here, flowers are in bloom, days are longer and EGGS are on our minds! It is time to gear up for the annual Easter celebration. This year, the entire third grade will mark this occasion with an egg hunt. We are reserving the old football field and track to scatter eggs. If inclement weather comes in, the activity will take place somewhere within the school building. Students may bring their own basket, or we will gladly furnish a grocery bag. Eggs will be redistributed in the classrooms following the hunt to ensure an equal bounty of goodies. There are a few items we are requesting to make this event a huge success. The third grade could use plastic eggs that are pre-stuffed with sealed candies. Eggs can be stuffed with little party favors/trinkets/toys if you prefer. If stuffing eggs is a hassle, sealed candies or toys will be fine as well. In my experience, the allure of the plastic egg is less important to students than the contents. If you would like to send packaged drinks, cookies, chips or treat bags this will be greatly appreciated. This will be a terrific way to celebrate the holiday and kick off Spring Break! The celebration will begin at 2:00 on April 6, 2012.

The Story of the Statue of Liberty

We are reading a story  about the Statue of Liberty. Maestro simplifies the story including only the most important people’s names, for example she still presents an accurate account of what happened. The exceptional drawings are visually delightful primarily in the blue-green range, although they are in full color and cover most of every page. Human figure workers, tourists are included in many drawings, indicating the statue’s tremendous scale. Further, the drawings involve viewers through the use of unusual perspectives and angles and by placing the statue in scenes of city life. One depicts Bartholdi sketching the statue in the foreground as he gazes at its future site on Bedloe’s Island. Another is of cranes and cables supporting laborers as they put Lady Liberty’s immense cloak in place over her steel frame. This title totally eclipses the previous picture book on the same subject, Nason’s Our Statue of Liberty (Modern Curriculum, 1969). A section, “Additional Information about the Statue. . . ,” includes excellent lists of dimensions, important people who helped with construction, repairs from 1980-86, a table of dates and Emma Lazarus’ poem as well as other interesting facts.
